The rediscovery of Cicero’s letters by Petrarch brought back to Europe the concept of Humanitas: personal development, civilization, and emphaty. A starting point for the renaissance and enlightenment. He brought that concept from the Greeks to the Romans and his letters to us. We owe him greatly.

I read the first two books when I was a teenager, the third wasn't out yet. Maybe it's time for a reread 😁

You need to give Quo Vadis a try! It’s an absolutely amazing book, follows Emperor Nero and it’s written beautifully, the love, religious themes and the history in it marked my reading of it!

Harris had a real gift for making the Roman Republic feel like a political thriller instead of distant history.
What makes the Cicero trilogy work so well is that he wasn’t writing about a hero. Cicero was vain, anxious, often outmaneuvered by people far more ruthless than him. He spent his whole life trying to save a Republic that was already dying around him.
That’s what makes the ending land so hard. You already know how it finishes. His hands nailed to the Senate doors. And you keep reading anyway, hoping this time it goes differently.
It never does. That’s exactly the point

my dads favourite books ever and i’m sooo grateful that he got me to read them cause they’re so good (and really accurate too despite being fiction, even all of the letters are extracts of real ones)
