3:16am and I was convinced I was the only person awake in the entire world. I know that sounds dramatic lol but if you’ve done the newborn night shift you KNOW what I mean 😭 The house is completely silent. My husband is asleep. My baby is eating. I’m sitting in the same chair I’ve already sat in like 4 times that night. And I’m doing that thing where I keep checking the clock even though checking the clock literally NEVER makes me feel better 😂 3:11. 3:14. 3:16. Why does time move at approximately 0.4x speed between 2 and 5am??? 😵‍💫 I was exhausted. Like eyes-burning, brain-not-working, can’t-remember-which-side-I-fed-on-last exhausted. And I remember looking down at my baby and loving her SO much while simultaneously thinking… I really really really don’t want to be awake right now. Then immediately feeling guilty for even thinking it. Which is such a postpartum thing 🙃 You can be completely obsessed with your baby AND desperately want them to please go back to sleep. You can be grateful AND miserable at 3am. You can love motherhood AND miss sleeping for longer than 97 consecutive minutes 😂 Anyway, I picked up my phone. I wasn’t even looking for anything specific. Probably just going to scroll for a few minutes so I wouldn’t fall asleep while feeding her. And I opened this map. 486 moms were awake. FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SIX. At 3:16 in the freaking morning. I literally stared at the number. Then started looking at all the little yellow lights scattered everywhere. Each one was a mom. A real mom awake at the exact same time as me. And suddenly my dark little nursery didn’t feel quite as lonely. Because somewhere another mom was sitting under a nightlight trying to get a burp. Another was pumping while everyone else slept. Another was making a bottle with one eye open 😂 Another was changing a blowout and questioning every life decision that led to that exact moment 😭 Another was probably trapped under a sleeping baby and debating whether she needed to pee badly enough to risk moving. Another was crying. Another was scrolling. Another was staring at the clock too. And I know this sounds like such a small thing. Nothing about my night actually changed. My baby didn’t magically sleep through the night because I saw a map 😂 I still had to finish feeding her. Still had to burp her. Still had to attempt the terrifying crib transfer. Still had no clue whether I was getting another 20 minutes or another 2 hours of sleep. But mentally something shifted. I wasn’t doing it by myself anymore. During the day everybody asks about the baby. How’s she sleeping? Is she gaining weight? Does she like the bassinet? And obviously I love talking about her. But sometimes I wanted someone to ask… How are YOU doing at 3am? Because 3am me was a completely different person 😂😭 3am me cried because I dropped my last clean burp cloth. 3am me googled whether babies could sense when you were thinking about putting them in the crib because I SWEAR THEY CAN. And 3am me really just needed to know somebody else was there. That night, 486 moms were. 🥹❤️ Different babies. Different cities. Different stories. Same night shift. Feeding. Pumping. Rocking. Shushing. Googling. Surviving 😂 Eventually my baby finished eating and passed OUT on me. I waited way longer than necessary because I was not risking it. Then came the transfer. Stand up slowly. Lower carefully. Butt first. Head down. Hand on chest. Freeze. Remove one finger at a time like you’re disabling a bomb 😂 SUCCESS. I climbed into bed and checked my phone one more time. Still glowing. Still hundreds of moms awake. And for some reason that made it easier to close my eyes. Because while my shift was ending, somebody else’s was starting 🥹 So if you’re sitting in a dark room at 3:16am tonight thinking everyone else is asleep… they’re not. There’s a whole invisible night shift of moms awake with you. 💛 And sometimes just knowing that is enough to make the night feel a little less heavy #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
