Chaos Legion - PlayStation 2 (2003) Chaos Legion is a 2003 hack and slash developed by Capcom. Released during the golden age of stylish action games, it was often overshadowed by its bigger brother, Devil May Cry. Despite that, it carved out its own identity with a dark gothic atmosphere, memorable characters, and one of the most original combat systems of its era. Set in a world inspired by dark fantasy, the game follows Sieg Wahrheit as he pursues his former friend Victor Delacroix, whose obsession with forbidden power threatens to bring about the end of humanity. The story unfolds through haunting environments, melancholic music, and a constant sense of tragedy. Rather than relying solely on fast-paced sword combat, Chaos Legion revolves around summoning Legions: powerful creatures that fight alongside the player. While the combat can feel repetitive and somewhat rigid during the first half of the game, it gradually opens up as new Legions are unlocked and upgraded, making encounters far more satisfying and revealing the depth of its combat system. Although it never achieved the commercial success Capcom had hoped for, Chaos Legion remains one of the PS2’s most overlooked action games. Its unique atmosphere and ambitious ideas gave it a personality that still stands out more than twenty years later. I genuinely believe that, with a more fluid combat system and a few modern refinements, Chaos Legion could make an incredible comeback. The foundation is already there, it just deserved the chance to evolve.
