I use similar writing method with SRS, and she's right I used textbook and Anki before, didn't work long term or with similar kanjis tried this method, memorized over 400 kanji in a month

I think that’s a really good tip! Getting a Japanese teacher who’s not native might really be a game changer since that person knows all the struggles of learning the language as an adult

Don't forget to immerse! The reason the writing it out method "works" for kids in Japan is because they see and use these characters/words every single day all day everday. learnjapanese.moe has a really good set of guides (not a bot and not sponsored, it's free and open source) for learning Japanese
