Sandthrax is one of Utah's most infamous slot canyons, and for good reason. Over the years, its challenging features have led to numerous incidents and rescues. The canyon is so narrow at the bottom that the only way through is to stem high above the floor, often around 50 feet off the ground. That sustained exposure is what gives Sandthrax its X-rating. Hours of stemming are interrupted by silos, wider sections that demand careful, deliberate climbing to pass safely. The crux of the route is a 5.11 off-width crack that must be climbed to continue down canyon. While back in Utah briefly this week, I was lucky to link up with Paul Barish for a quick day trip through Sandthrax. Moving as a team of two, we made good time through the long stemming sections and silos. When we reached the crux, Paul led it smoothly without any trouble. The Crux is where people often get into trouble. On one of my previous descents, a teammate fell at the crux and was caught only by a single cam, so that section definitely demands some respect. We ended up finishing in about 3.5 hours car to car. I was especially impressed with Paul, who has a strong climbing background but very little slot canyon experience. He handled a canyon that takes some people years to build up to. Overall, an incredible day out in one of Utah's most infamous and challenging slot canyons. #climbing #canyoneering #sandthrax #tradclimbing #rockclimbing
