Likbez (from the Russian likvidatsiya bezgramotnosti, meaning "liquidation of illiteracy") was a massive Soviet campaign to eradicate illiteracy, initiated on December 26, 1919, when Vladimir Lenin signed a historic decree. The sweeping program required all citizens aged 8 to 50 to learn to read and write. The campaign was largely successful. Prior to the revolution, the Russian Empire’s adult literacy rate was just under 32%.
