@uglytruthofcoparenting: One parenting question I get asked a lot is: “Should we buy our teenager a car together?” My answer? In a high-conflict situation, absolutely not. It sounds fair. It sounds logical. It sounds like good co-parenting. Until real life starts happening. Who pays for gas? Who pays for insurance? Who pays for repairs? Who chooses the mechanic? Who decides where the car can go? Who decides who can ride in it? Who pays when there’s an accident? Who pays for tires? Who pays for maintenance? Who gets possession of the car during each parenting week? What started as one purchase quickly turns into 100 opportunities for conflict. And guess who gets stuck in the middle? Your child. Personally, I believe that if you feel strongly that your child needs a car and you have the ability to provide one, then make that decision yourself. Not because it’s fair. Not because your ex will appreciate it. But because you don’t want your child trapped in years of arguments over a vehicle. I’ve done this for both of my older children. And one thing they still talk about as adults is how grateful they were that the car wasn’t another source of conflict. The car belonged to them. It went where they went. It wasn’t Mom’s car. It wasn’t Dad’s car. It was theirs. That freedom mattered. That normalcy mattered. That independence mattered. Now, every family is different. Not every teenager needs a car. Not every parent can afford one. But if you’re having this discussion, I would encourage you to think less about your ex and more about your child. Because this isn’t really a co-parenting decision. It’s a parenting decision. And honestly, this is one of those topics I wouldn’t spend valuable parenting plan space trying to control. There are plenty of other issues that need detailed language and protection. A teenager’s future vehicle usually isn’t one of them. If you want help building a parenting plan that focuses on the issues that actually create long-term conflict, comment PURPLE in DMs. Know better. Do better. #parentingplanhelp #highconflictdivorce #coparentingstrategy #parentingteens #custodybattle

I’d rather just pay for everything to save myself the drama.

We bought our step daughters car! No stipulations on where it could or couldn’t do, but we knew if they’re other parent bought it, it would be highly regulated, used as leverage, and taken away so she couldn’t drive to us and back and we wanted her to have the freedom.

Need your opinion: I have 50/50 and pay 1k in child support, along with paying for health insurance, dental and vision. My ex wants me to also buy the car and pay for insurance. (It’s high conflict) should I also be buying the car? Shouldn’t he prove the car?

Thoughts on buying a teen a car when they’ve stopped visiting tho .. simply because we don’t let him sleep until 4 pm and we have rules and morals at our house . He turns 16 this year . But hasn’t been here in 3 months so far . Didn’t even care to get out of bed to see his dad on Father’s Day .

Do people actually do that? Buy the kid a car that can only be ised on their time? That's wild.

Thinking of gifting our car to my bonus baby. But I’m afraid hcbm will wreck the car purposefully or accidentally (she has been wreckless with her own). Not sure what we should do

I just paid off my car, and I’m keeping it. However, I’m fixing to buy a new/newer car so when my 10 year old starts driving she’s got one that’s close to if not paid off, I know the history of the car, and don’t have to worry about prices increasing in a few years or getting a lemon cause that’s all I can afford. Not even involving her dad on that one.

We bought for my son to use here he loves here 90% of the month. But WC is three hours away and I’m not comfortable with him driving three hours there for the weekend twice a month

Parents don’t need to “pay” for car expenses. I was 16 with a job and I paid for my vehicle’s expenses. My kids will do the same.

We did it for 2 kids. Both put in 5K each. I paid insurance & helped with gas. He paid maintenance. It worked for us because it was making sure they were in a safe vehicle at all times. Sometimes you just have to make it work!

The best is though when they do buy a car for them and then say “they can’t use it on your parenting time” because they paid.

Both my daughters need braces and I haven’t even taken them to the office because I know it’s going to be a pain for reimbursement and all the financial burden falls on me.

Thoughts on splitting car insurance for a vehicle never used at your home for your 16 year old who is only with you 24 overnights per year, policy/vehicle not in your name in a high conflict dynamic?

Our lawyer wouldn’t let us put anything about a car in our parenting plan so we created a separate document and all the co-parents & teen driver signed it spelling out all expectations regarding permit driving for all parents & teen. We will do another agreement when teen upgrades to a full license & include details about the car
