Normalise being paid to "do nothing" when you're also dealing with rushes of customers too. When you're "doing nothing" you're not doing nothing, you're on standby & still giving the company your time & energy by being there, mentally and physically prepared for the next rush. When you're dealing with mad rushes, you're often doing more work in a short time than your paycheck is worth if you had to work like that constantly. Your work pattern can follow the flow of customers, being idle at work is sort of necessary sometimes in order to work efficiently. If you're too exhausted on shift, because you can never be idle or give yourself time to process and plan for the next rush, then you will not be as efficient at work.

I miss my old chief who was like "There's nothing to do? I'm not gonna make you clean the walls, go disappear somewhere and come back when it's time (for the service)" which meant "Go rest, read, whatever" 😭
