@melrobbins: Strong relationships don’t fight less; they fight differently. Dr. John and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, founders of @TheGottmanInstitute and the world’s leading relationship researchers, have spent 50 years studying how couples handle conflict and stay connected. Healthy conflict doesn’t start with blame. It starts with being honest about how you feel. No attacking. No blaming. Just what’s actually going on. And instead of getting defensive, the other person gets curious. They listen. They ask questions. They try to understand what’s really underneath. That’s the shift. You move from trying to win… to trying to understand. And that’s what leads to real solutions. On this episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, the Gottmans break down how to handle conflict in a way that brings you closer — so you can stop talking past each other and start feeling like a team again. This conversation is both parties remaining curious. Neither are assuming one or the other is attacking them or have ill intent.

Can you show the next argument where John still didn’t wipe the counters and Julie feels ignored/unheard?

Let me tell you, 100% she told him milion times to wipe it and he never did. Arguments never happen because someone didn't do something. It happens because even though she asked many times, he still ignores it.

in order for this work both people have to some level of healing and emotional intelligence. Problem is that most people have unresolved trauma and are not able to express themselves effectively.

NVC - non violent communication. say your observations, state how you feel, share your needs and finish by requesting.

i’m 30.. been with the same man since 23. we’ve never had to yell when we disagree. if it’s too much, we say “i need some time to figure out what i really want to say” and the other person respects that space

acknowledging the emotion first is the most important part that I look for!!! I want to feel seen and heard, not just jump straight into logistics. a quick "I'm so sorry that you're feeling that way and for my role in adding to those feelings" - like she demonstrated here - takes so much of the tension away for me. then it's easier to move into a problem solving headspace.
