@oxfordmathematics: It's the question we always get asked. Why do your lecturers write on whiteboards when the unparalleled joys of PowerPoint et al are available? Here's Derek Moulton's take. Talking of Derek, we're showing his full 1st year Dynamics course. Just go to the Oxford Mathematics YouTube Channel for the first two lectures (of sixteen). #maths #stem #student

I believe mathematics is a very intimate subject. Beautiful poetry of the universe.

BS the only process people are engaging in is copying stuff from the board

As an engineering student from the 80’s before all the technology. I eventually found that the best way to learn from a lecture was to physically write in my notes what was being physically written on the board (chalk at that time). I almost never went back to review except to do homework. The physical act of writing and understanding the equations in real time was key for me. Everyone is different, but, I struggle to learn passively and I couldn’t do it by simply watching slides.

this reflects one reason why people find maths so difficult: we don't realize that learning maths is not difficult, we just have difficult teachers. it will remain so until professors find an approach that serves the majority

the massive whiteboards would definitely need replicating to have the same teaching potential. but writing by hand sets an almost perfect teaching pace that let's everyone take notes

I prefer to write out on a white board too and not use electronics (iPad, smart board, etc.).

since the late 90s we had powerpoint but students didnt like it. planking down slide after slide misses the details. I used powerpoint and whiteboard plus videos.

I think it also helps us, the teachers, slow down a bit if we’re having to write it all out (just like the students are writing it all out)

I grew up writing mathematics with white chalk on a black board. It doesn't matter the monochromatic nature of the table, only the message and that it is written by hand for good cognitive skills

I had a great algorithmic discrete mathematics lecture with slides and it really depends what the lecturer wants to work with and is comfortable doing.

I’ve been saying this after teaching by writing my notes on a laptop screen. The writing in the board seems better paced and its comfortableness for students seems better.

👏👏👏Hello my Friends. I am Raymond. Many years ago I invested myself in mathematical research and finally I would like to tell you that I have managed to solve the Riemann Hypothesis *using Gemini to go on complex calculus of my polynomial method *And using an Abel Transformation geometric formula that I calculated in my own . Take a look at my videos and don't forget to share the news 🗞️... I'm searching for help to obtain my recognition in mathematics and in Abel Sum research and also my work on FIBONACCI Numbers , and so be able to apply for prestigious awards such as the Fields Prize or Abel Prize... comment, like and share my videos...
