As a Chinese person, let me explain this from Chinese culture, since this practice actually originated from China. In Chinese tradition, each generation of a family shares one specific character in their names. This practice still exists today, though it's no longer strictly followed; families aren't required to do it. That character isn't randomly chosen. It comes from a sentence decided by family elders generations ago, a sentence that reads like a poem and makes sense as a whole. This sentence is recorded in the family's genealogy book, which typically documents all male descendants of the family line. Each generation takes its character from this poem, in order: the first generation uses the first character, the second generation uses the second, and so on. Once the family reaches the end of the poem, naming starts over from the first character again.
