Public universities were free before Ronald Reagan (during his governorship of California 1967–1975). He introduced mandatory fees of $60 to $100 per semester.

I’m a professor; trust me when I say that this vid is 💯 correct. My undergrad uni just hired a friend of mine to replace my undergrad mentor who retired three yrs ago. Undergrad mentor started as an asst prof in the early 90s w/a 12-month contract at $52K. My friend just got a 9-month contract at $56/K. 35 years and the yearly salary has gone up $4K. Enrollment is down at that uni by about 25% since the 90s.

Government funding also has been cut in large amounts since the 1980s.

It’s the same effect with healthcare facilities like hospitals. There’s more administrative staff than clinical providers and that on top of other factors are raising costs.

In many schools today, administration is a larger share of the budget than instruction. That’s just wrong. We are spending more on things that don’t create value

Title IX Coordinator here! ppl would be shocked at how much we spend on investigations and hearings. Legal in general is very expensive. You have no idea how much we have to spend just to stay out of court.

All my classes taught by TAs, but the landscaping was top notch and the road in from the interstate was practically gilded.

This is a GREAT explanation. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 People have NO idea how complex higher ed finances are. Cybersecurity has got to be extraordinarily expensive, by the way.

I make under 30k a year as part time faculty at my institution teaching 6 units. Trust me. Faculty salaries are NOT the problem.

Higher Education Act (1965) was a compromise bill that included federal financial aid access for all students and the intent was that institutions would compete for students (dollars). Institutions have built up to compete and have added health, wellness resources, and student services that simply didn’t exist decades ago. That’s where a lot of the money has gone/goes.

The number one student expense is housing, right? It’s not admin. It’s not overpaid people in another department. It’s charging the same rate for an apartment all to yourself as a dorm room with four to six other people. And nobody thinks it’s overpaid profs.

They cut professor and just have adjuncts. So many of my friends had to give up their academic careers because they were underemployed and couldn’t survive.
