According to Buddhism, the self is like the flame of a candle. When you look at a candle, it seems to have one continuous flame, but in reality the flame is changing every moment as new wax, fuel, and oxygen are burned. It has continuity, yet it is never exactly the same flame from one instant to the next. In the same way, what we call “self” is not a permanent, unchanging entity. It is a continuous process made up of changing body, thoughts, feelings, memories, and consciousness. Because these changes happen seamlessly, we experience the illusion of a fixed “I.” Buddhism teaches that there is continuity without a permanent self just as there is a continuous flame without a single, unchanging flame existing throughout its entire burn.
