@bookswithamanda212: A type of expression that more people need to learn how to communicate correctly is an apology. Communicating healthily is the fundamental basis to any successful relationship with romantic partners, colleagues, friends, and family. A lot of people weren’t taught how to apologize correctly or were forced to adapt a style of apology based on how they were punished growing up. But it’s our job to unlearn poor behaviors even if it’s not our fault we learned them in the first place #communication #relationships #healthycommunication #emotionalintelligence #emotionalregulation
I think giving a reason of why you did something is perfectly acceptable, as long as you're not minimising the apology or using it as an excuse to avoid accountability. I like context

I always over apologize and sometimes explain myself which can come off as justifying so I have learned to just apologize and stop at that, but I still struggle with over-apologising and trying to unlearn it.

i find it interesting how some people like reasons in apologies and others don't. to me an apology is not complete without the "why". i care a lot more about the underpinning sentiments, reasons and intentions than i do the specific actions. mistakes can be once-off, but the reasons for the mistake tells you a lot about the person. i'm much more willing to forgive a well-intentioned accident than i am to forgive an innate flaw of character.

hot take: sometimes it actually doesnt matter who was "right" and who was "wrong." sometimes you have to apologize even when you think they don't deserve an apology. and sometimes you have to forgive a person even if they don't apologize.

It just makes me sad when people over apologize because it’s clearly a trauma response.

is it also a passive aggressive apology if im telling someone what they did to hurt me and give them specifics and they come back and say "im sorry IF that hurt your feelings" even when im telling them exactly what hurt my feelings?

I haattteeee why someone is apologizing and they say “i’m sorry IF i hurt you” THATS NOT AN APOLOGY!!! you know you hurt me so apologize for hurting me! when you say “if” when apologizing it makes it seem that you don’t know if you really did something wrong or not. so how can you apologize if you don’t even think/know if you did something wrong? you’re apologizing for a reason so don’t put “if” in front of it.

learning WHEN to apologize has made my life so much less stressful. I was told one time by a manager who was correcting a simple mistake "don't apologize, say thank you and correct it."

I really hate, “ I am sorry you feel that way”, such a backhand apology.

“I’m so sorry I hurt you. It was not my intention but I can tell I clearly impacted you regardless. Here’s what I’d like to do to repair the hurt (list how you’re going to repair). I’d love to hear your thoughts so we can avoid this in the future and I am happy to give context if you’d like to hear it. But first, I’m sorry.”

identify what you did wrong, why it was wrong, what you could have done better, how you plan to do better moving forward. and then put action behind that.
I don't need guilt, I don't need groveling. I need you to make better choices.

Instead of saying “i’m sorry you feel that way”, i feel like it’s better to say “im sorry that i made you feel that way because that was not my intentions at all”.

I need a part 2 where you talk what disqualifies an apology. Where you go over common apology formats and point out their pitfalls. Like for example Nolan’s apology in invincible. It was crazy how so many people didn’t get why Debbie didn’t accept his apology when to me it was clear as day why.

as a person who has the tendency to over-apologize, i find that i'm often seeking my own forgiveness in order to not view myself as a terrible person, rather than the actual recipient's forgiveness

I used to teach my 1st grade students how to apologize correctly. We practiced every day and I hope it stuck (they’re in high school now!)

I combat passive aggressive apologies by accepting them. It signals to your brain that you don’t have the carry the weight how how they wronged you or their fake apology, and that you can give it to the person who’s fault it is. You are essentially and rightfully sealing the accountability with the other person and the best part is, it was their idea. They are childish so they won’t really like this, but you nervous system requires this

actually I think it's good to let the other person explain themselves... that type of communication makes the relationship easier for both parties. Not with a "but", maybe with a "I'm sorry I did this, I was *whatever explanation*" and you're not forced to understand the explanation either
