#ksmnewsonline • Chief Inspector Frimpong Ayeh has disclosed that commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders, risk severe penalties if they cause the death of a passenger through an accident. According to him, if an Okada rider is involved in an accident that results in the death of a pillion rider, the court may impose a fine of 2,000 penalty units — approximately GH¢24,000 — or a jail term of up to two years. He further explained that if a passenger sustains minor injuries from an accident, the rider could be fined 100 penalty units, which is approximately GH¢1,200. In cases where the injuries are serious, the court may impose a fine of 500 penalty units, equivalent to about GH¢6,000. Chief Inspector Frimpong Ayeh cautioned riders to exercise extreme care on the roads, stressing that the law will deal strictly with anyone who violates traffic regulations. He added that now that Okada operations have been legalized, riders must treat the business as a professional occupation and adhere strictly to road safety laws to protect lives and avoid legal consequences. - #KSTV
