What I actually prescribe my patients for brain health, and why each one earns its spot. The twist: the most powerful thing isn't a pill, and it isn't any single habit. The hack is the stack. In the 2025 US POINTER trial (published in JAMA)*, four habits together, strength and movement, the MIND diet, protecting your blood vessels, and staying mentally and socially engaged, improved memory and thinking over two years. No single one carried it. They worked as a set. The MIND diet is the brain-specific eating pattern those trials used: leafy greens and berries most days, plus nuts, beans, whole grains, olive oil, and fish, with less red meat, butter, fried food, and sweets. You don't need it perfect. You need the direction. The bigger the stack, the better the odds: in observational data, women running 4 to 5 of these had up to 56% lower Alzheimer's risk than women doing almost none. Some single factors are strong too: midlife mental activity tracks with about 46% lower Alzheimer's risk in women, and better cardiovascular health with about 39% lower risk (relative risks, not guarantees). This is risk reduction, not a promise, and most of the scarier headlines you see are observational. But this is the version I can stand behind in clinic. Save it and pick one tonight. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This information is not medical advice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. Always consult your doctor before starting any supplement or changing your diet. *Source: Baker LD, Espeland MA, et al.
