@missclairebenjamin: How to respond when someone makes a devious comment… Unfortunately there is a reality that sometimes people share information with us that isn’t from the best of intentions. There is information that’s helpful to share with someone and there’s information that the person can’t really do anything with and is therefore likely to only cause emotional harm. Knowing the difference can sometimes be a fine line. 3 questions someone shared with me that I find helpful are: Does this need saying Does this need saying now Does this need saying by me If you’re on the receiving end of information you suspect may be being shared to belittle you or undermine you, then I would recommend asking the person to clarify their intention for sharing it and if you feel uncomfortable move the conversation on. If it is second hand information you can always explore what they shared with the people directly involved. 💬 Have you ever been in a situation like this? What did you do? 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Best answer “well First and second choice didn’t take it, lucky for me. Moving on, maybe don’t listen to office gossips”.

I'd simply respond with: OK, that's not my business.

I’ve literally just been told I was the second choice because they wanted a colleague to get it. Tricky situation!

I have had this before. I have said to my employee. - say what’s on your mind, then after the comment I say. Thank you for comments, however, I do not get involved in rumors and speculation. I won’t be taking the matter any further, if there is nothing else, let’s get down to business.

I’ve been the second choice for a job and know others who are the same. First pick isn’t always the best pick. I’d never take it personally

On my first day I was sent an on-boarding doc that linked to notes from the interviews and the ranking discussion. I was the 2nd choice candidate. I thought it was a mistake, then I got to know the person who prepped the on-boarding doc better. I was the bigger person then, but now am in a management role where I have zero tolerance for that kind of bullying.

I was told this by my “helpful colleague” once and that I was replacing someone who was soooo much more mature than me. It rattled me as I already felt like an outsider coming to work in an area and business very different from my experience m. My manager noticed my change in behaviour so I told him. He then laughed and said I absolutely was his first option and that she had no business talking about that. I could let go after that but the over thinking was over thinking 😆 it was about 15 years ago now and now I would have handled it differently. Good manager though, I liked him!
