I have to disagree with you on your second point. While students pay thousands of dollars to take a class, most of that money goes to the university and not the faculty teaching the course. Faculty are done with the "customer" mentality of students. Many of us spend more time trying to help students be successful when students want maximum grades for minimum effort. When more of those tuition dollars go towards faculty salaries instead of administration, then faculty will have more motivation to improve their teaching. When salaries don't keep up with the increases in costs of living so that faculty have to pick up a second job to make ends meet while administration that sits behind a desk most of the time, then there is a problem.

i disagree. i am at an r1. my contractual division of effort is 60% research, 30% teaching, and 10% service. i am constantly told to pull back on my teaching effort and direct that energy to my research.

Your second point is tough. I’m at a large R1 university and per my contract, research is a larger portion than teaching. So I kind of have to put more emphasis there but you’re right about office hours and emails

Most universities do not value teaching. They value research. It brings in more money than tuition. I was mentored to let teaching go and focus on research. I didn’t listen. I got tenure, but I will never get full. Yet, the people who do crap for teaching and publish a ton of manuscripts that no one will read get all the recognition and full professor. So, I’m out over 10k a year because I value teaching.

My only thought on office hours is this, I've worked at 3 teaching focused institutions, and students don't come to office hours. That's not a student problem, it's a problem of academia not keeping up with the reality of a digital world.

No, my job is to profess, not to teach. Learning strategies are up to the student, my job is to tell the story of my discipline. This isn't high school.

Research will always be priority. That’s not a professor thing. That’s a structural thing. Research brings money and tenure

4. You are using pedagogy to teach college. I teach both high school and college. I use pedagogy for my high school kids and blend andragogy for my community college students. It’s different. Use AI to assist lesson planning.

Also professors that grade like they are teaching a graduate level or doctorate level course! Like you are teaching an undergraduate level course… don’t expect doctorate level work. (I am not saying to undergrads but be fair)

Looking at this comment section, explains why we barely get taught. Coming from an adult student who went back to college. Thankful to be graduating in December. Because I see now what is valued more.

professors also need to limit or completely stop their usage od AI to grade students work,(IE: Turnitin etc) while trying to penalize the same student for supposedly using AI when there is no proof.

I’m an elementary school counselor who has a daughter who will be an incoming freshman this Fall. She’s currently doing a summer bridge program. I have shared several of your videos with her. Thank you, because this is new territory for us, but I’ve agreed with so much you’ve said. My daughter is currently taking a History class where the teacher only reads off a PowerPoint for over an hour. This can not be what we are paying for.🤦🏾‍♀️Also, the accountability piece for educators on many students failing their class and educators who purposely make it hard for students is necessary. As a school counselor, someone like this makes me side eye them to inquire the “why” behind doing something like that. Anyway, thank you for the information you share.

I wish we had more professors like you. Learning the material in college isn’t the hard part. It’s figuring out what the professor is expecting. Way too often what they are expecting, teaching, and is in the textbook are all completely different things that are pretty much unrelated
