The Iraqi Air Force before of the strongest air forces in the Middle East, especially during the 1980s. Founded in 1931, it began with simple British aircraft and gradually developed over time. During the 1970s and 1980s, Iraq received significant military support and advanced equipment from the Soviet Union and France, which helped build a diverse and advanced air fleet. At its peak during the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqi Air Force operated hundreds of combat aircraft, including MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29, Su-22, Su-24, and Mirage F1. These aircraft were used for deep strike missions inside Iran, air defense operations, and targeting oil tankers in the Gulf during the so-called “Tanker War.” During the 1991 Gulf War, the Iraqi Air Force faced a highly unequal confrontation against coalition forces led by the United States. Despite this, Iraqi pilots carried out combat sorties under extremely difficult conditions, including direct aerial engagements and long-range operations. Some pilots flew low-altitude missions to avoid radar detection, increasing the level of risk. There were also recorded instances of direct air combat, most notably the engagement attributed to Zuhair Dawood, who is reported to have shot down an F/A-18 Hornet in the early days of the war. From the outset of the conflict, coalition forces established near-total air superiority using advanced aircraft, early warning systems, and electronic warfare capabilities. In contrast, the Iraqi Air Force continued operations relying on aircraft such as MiG-29, MiG-25, and Mirage F1. Overall, the Iraqi Air Force demonstrated the ability to operate under intense pressure, maintaining combat activity despite the technological and operational challenges.#airforce#wor#lraq#troops
