Don’t let them see you cry, it’ll only add fuel to their guilt.” He moved to face them and was taken aback as he looked at the faces of his friends— his comrades. No, his family. Family? In that moment he realized he had never been a stray with nowhere to go, he had been Thomas, leader of the Apprentices, brother to Ruth, Orland, Savannah, Darrick, and lover to Sota. The lump in his throat was gone, and so were the tears. “I choose to do this of my own volition. I want to protect my family.” He turned quickly to the enemy, charging up for his nullification spell as he heard his family in the distance screaming at him, saying anything to get him to stop. But Thomas’ mind was made up, if he were to die doing anything, it would be protecting his apprentices.
