Chapter 11 — The Dinner Invitation Friday evening arrived. Most employees had already left the office when Charlotte finished arranging the last documents on her desk. She looked at the clock. “Finally.” She picked up her bag. “Going home?” Charlotte turned. Engfa was standing at her office door. “Yes, Ma'am.” Engfa nodded. “Good.” Charlotte smiled. “You're leaving too?” “Soon.” Charlotte walked toward the elevator. Then her phone rang. “Kirk.” She answered. “Hello?” “Are you free tonight?” Charlotte hesitated. “I was planning to go home.” “I know. I just wanted to take you to dinner.” Charlotte glanced toward Engfa. “Tonight?” “Yes. Just dinner.” Charlotte smiled politely. “Okay.” Engfa heard the conversation. She didn't say anything. But her expression changed. Charlotte ended the call. “Good night, Ma'am.” “Good night.” Charlotte walked away. Engfa watched her until the elevator doors closed. P'Sun, who had just returned for something he'd forgotten, noticed. “You're doing it again.” Engfa looked at him. “Doing what?” “Watching Charlotte leave.” Engfa frowned. “She's my secretary.” P'Sun smiled. “Of course.” That evening, Charlotte met Kirk at a quiet restaurant. He pulled out her chair. “How's work?” “Busy.” “Your boss?” Charlotte laughed. “Very strict.” “Do you like working for her?” Charlotte thought for a moment. “Yes.” Kirk looked surprised. “Really?” “She pushes me to do better.” Kirk smiled. “I'm glad you're happy.” Charlotte lowered her eyes. “Kirk…” “I know.” He gently smiled. “You don't have to explain.” Charlotte looked at him. “You're always kind to me.” “Because I care about you.” She was quiet. Kirk reached across the table but stopped before touching her hand. “I'll wait.” Charlotte's expression softened. “I don't want you to wait for something I can't promise.” “I understand.” He smiled. “But I'll still hope.” Charlotte didn't know what to say. Across town, Engfa sat alone in her apartment. She had opened her laptop three times. She had read the same email three times. And she still couldn't concentrate. She looked at her phone. No message from Charlotte. She frowned. “Why am I waiting?” She put the phone down. A minute later, she picked it up again. Nothing. Engfa sighed. She hated this feeling. She didn't understand it. She only knew that for the first time in years, work wasn't enough to occupy her thoughts. Her mind kept returning to one person. Charlotte. And somewhere between irritation and curiosity, Engfa was slowly losing the battle she didn't even know she had started. ❤️
