Each napkin at HeyTea has a Steve Jobs quote printed on it:
Each napkin at HeyTea has a Steve Jobs quote printed on it: "Make a dent in the universe." This HeyTea is in Cupertino, around a mile from Apple's headquarters. On a Saturday, the wait to get in was about half an hour. HeyTea is a Chinese tea chain. It is my favorite. I probably go two or three times a week and almost always order the same thing: a grape slushie with a cheese cap, which is a layer of slightly salty cheese foam on top. In China, this was HeyTea's best-selling drink. In 2020, a 650-milliliter cup cost 29 yuan, or about $4.20. At that time, HeyTea was the most expensive tea in China. Then, lots of cheaper tea chains opened up in China. Another tea chain, Guming, had two best-selling drinks that were copies of HeyTea's fruit drinks with cheese caps. Its grape drink cost around 19 yuan, or $2.80. In the summer of 2025, the competition turned into a war. Delivery apps in China started subsidizing customers' tea drinks. Milk teas dropped to a few yuan and sometimes were free. One shop owner said that for a cup of milk tea that cost 19 yuan, or about $2.65, his store now made only around 7 yuan, or less than a dollar. HeyTea held out for a while longer, but in August of 2025, it, too, joined the discounts, selling its drinks for between 6.9 yuan and 9.9 yuan, between about $1 and $1.40, on a discount platform run by Meituan, the biggest delivery app. From October of 2024 to October of 2025, the company's store count in China fell by 680. This isn't just about tea. There's a Chinese word for this kind of situation: neijuan, which is usually translated into English as "involution": everyone works harder but gains less. It's also happening in the car business and in solar panels. For 41 consecutive months, factory prices in China fell. The streak ended in March of this year. The government is now trying to stop it. In July 2024, the Politburo of the Communist Party of China called for preventing "involution-style vicious competition." In March of this year, the state-owned newspaper Economic Daily wrote that the delivery war "looks like it benefits people, but is really involution." Until the authorities can break it, the way out for companies is to go international. In the summer of 2024, HeyTea had two stores in America. As of June of this year, it had more than 40. My grape slushie explains why: in Boston, the same 650-milliliter cup costs $9.99, plus tax, more than double what it cost in China in 2020. HeyTea hasn't stopped being a premium brand. It just can't remain one in China. The country overbuilt stores and factories beyond what its own customers could pay for, and now companies are cutting prices until they are barely making money. Those that can avoid this fate are doing so by charging the rest of the world the prices that they can no longer charge in China.
