OTHER THAN everyone who didn’t make it home or lost a limb on D-Day. Regardless, Staff Sergeant Ray Lambert was put through the wringer as soon as he landed with the first wave on Omaha Beach at Dog Green Sector. (The part of the beach famously portrayed in Saving Private Ryan.) Lambert was shot instantly, as soon as the ramp on his Higgins Boat dropped. Ignoring his injury, Lambert began collecting and treating wounded behind a large piece of concrete now memorialized as “Ray’s Rock.” Unfortunately, his day was far from over. An explosion sent a piece of shrapnel the size of his hand through his thigh. Lambert said he could see down to the bone. Instead of clocking out, though, he tied a tourniquet around his leg, gave himself a shot of morphine, and kept saving lives. At some point, Lambert realized that he was probably too wounded to continue and tried to explain to a fellow medic how to take over. Mid-explanation, that medic took a round straight through his head, so Lambert kept on going. Eventually, Lambert spotted a wounded soldier stuck in the surf. He ran out to save the man but just as he grabbed him another Higgins Boat pulled up and, not seeing the two soldiers, dropped its ramp right on top of them. The ramp pancaked Lambert, breaking two vertebrae in his spine and trapping him underwater. He had no way out. He began to drown. By some miracle, the Higgins Boat decided it was in the wrong spot, pulled its ramp back up, and moved, allowing Lambert, now with two gaping holes and a broken back, to pull the man to safety. Soon after, Lambert passed out from the blood loss and was evacuated. He lived to 100. #History #dday #veteran #usa #merica
