@harrykersleysinger: If your high notes feel stuck, the problem might not be your breath… it might be your tongue 🎶 One of the most common habits I see is singers pulling the tongue backwards as they ascend. It often feels like you’re creating more space, but in reality it can have the opposite effect. When the tongue retracts, it can narrow the pharyngeal space and interfere with the resonance of the vocal tract. The voice then has to work much harder to achieve the same result. Physiologically, the tongue is closely connected to structures around the larynx and vocal tract. Excess tongue tension can influence laryngeal behaviour, alter vowel acoustics, and make it more difficult for the vocal folds to stretch and coordinate efficiently through the passaggio. The result? ❌ Less resonance ❌ More effort ❌ Harder high notes ❌ A feeling of being “stuck” in the throat The goal isn’t to force the tongue forward unnaturally. It’s to allow it to stay responsive and free so the vocal tract can organise itself efficiently. Very often, when the tongue releases, the high notes suddenly become easier because the resonance has somewhere to go. Freedom in the tongue often creates freedom in the voice. 🎶 DM “Lesson” if you’d like help building easier, more resonant high notes. #vocalcoach #singer #singing #tenor #foryou
