Two things can be true at the same time: you can be loved and you can be hated, often by the same person. For those who think Beyoncé is not subject to the same rules, I’ve got news for you. Not only was she sold into the industry by her own parents, who also tried to sell her sisters, she is and will always be a subject in this lifetime. She doesn’t have a choice. Just because she’s leaned into the cruelty and acts like a flaming narcissist boob does not mean that she has all this autonomy. Her queendom is an act.
