Maddieknc :
Remember, you’re an American (not exactly the world’s favorite nationality at the moment, unfortunately), and it’s important to respect the culture and customs of the countries you visit; especially countries that are not fully Westernized, or are only partially Westernized, like Turkey 🇹🇷.
That said, Turkey is a diverse, modern country, and what’s considered appropriate can vary depending on the city, neighborhood, and situation. It’s a beautiful country with wonderful people, but “cheeks out” and “boobs out” generally isn’t the best choice if you’re trying to be respectful and comfortable while traveling.
The safest and most practical approach is:
• Shorts that reach mid-thigh or longer
• T-shirts, blouses, sundresses, or other light tops
• A light cardigan for cooler evenings or more conservative settings
• A scarf or shawl in your bag for mosque visits or traditional areas
• Beachwear reserved for beaches and pools
How do I know? I’ve been to Turkey several times, my best friend’s husband is Turkish, and my ex was Turkish as well. Hope this helps, and safe travels! 😊
