Another example: "latte". in italian, latte IS milk. if you want to order a "latte", order a "latte macchiato" (glass of milk with some drops of coffee). And l don't wish to mention ketchup on pasta, pineapple on pizza, cheese on seafood, sodas instead of beer/wine, etc.

we didn't have all-knowing smart devices in our pockets not very long time ago and still managed to have basic decency to learn at least some words to be polite guest. now we have tools and we fail to use them.

As someone from a non-English speaking country, when I go to one where I don't speak the language, I'll start conversation with "Is English OK?" If not, I'll fumble along with whatever I know, and some pointing to the menus and stuff.

As finnish I do not assume people to learn my language but what annoys me the most is that tourists are so entitled. So often I see tourists crossing the road where it’s not legal, standing on tram tracks/in the middle of the road to take pictures, walking in the middle of the street with 4-8 people so ypu can’t get past them, and just in general having 0 spacial awareness. So often they seem to assume they can do whatever they like bc they are a tourist and general rules (or common sense) does not apply to them.
