We’ve always shared our spaces, culture, and support with everyone else. Yet the moment we try to have something for ourselves, we’re met with racism, criticism, and hostility.

As a Black woman, I have no issue with people creating spaces that center their own communities and shared experiences. In the same way that some Black women appreciate Black woman-centered spaces, I understand that other groups may desire spaces that reflect their own backgrounds and perspectives. Personally, if I came across a space that was not intended for me, I would simply recognize that not every space has to be. My focus is less on gaining access to every room and more on cultivating spaces where I feel seen, understood, and at home. There is nothing wrong with Black women wanting environments that center Black women’s experiences, just as there is nothing wrong with people seeking community among those with whom they share common experiences.
