@every.dollar: There’s a weird moment in parenting when the goal shifts from making decisions for your kids to helping them make good decisions for themselves 👏 This dad wasn’t sure moving out was the right call, but walking through an EveryDollar budget together could help turn a dream into an actual plan instead of a financial surprise.

This is so bizarre. I moved out at 18 and went to college.

That's great advice and how I aspire to raise my kids, guiding them through life not guiding their decisions 🥰

She's 21, your opinion doesn't matter. You can give her advice but if she goes against that advice then support her decision. She'll learn as she goes.

Continue paying tuition as long as her grades stay passing, too.

don't use tuition as a punishment bc u don't like her choices when she is doing the right thing.

What CoL area are we talking about? Are we talking $1000 studios or $2500?

if you don’t let them fall down when you can help them get up, they will fall when you can’t help and not know how to get up.

My son moved into his own apartment at 20. We told him as long as he was still in school & working we could cover half the rent and school. Why? He could have gone away for school and we would have spent more than that on a dorm like we did his older sister. He has grown up SO MUCH through the last 2 years. He’ll call me and ask which brand of something makes the most sense to buy or how to make xyz. For Easter he asked for cleaning supplies and laundry stuff in his basket 😂 if possible, helping your kids go out into the world to figure it out is one of the best things we can do as parents. If they fail, they learn a lesson. If they succeed they gain confidence!

I think this is great advice. Even if she’s only out for a short period of time and asked to come home, she will have learned many life lessons in the short time she’s out. Or she succeeds at it, and you can feel good knowing you helped her succeed.

Kids have to learn. Life teaches the best lessons. You do your best to teach them then let them fly.

Best thing you can do is give realistic numbers fairly and options. For instance does move out mean live by herself or with roommates. At that age you should be in a place with 3 other people to keep costs down.

our middle daughter moved out cold turkey when she was 18. made several pretty major mistakes but she's learned how hard it is. she's still doing it though, working her tail off but its the choice she made and we respected it from the beginning

Sounds like a great girl! Be proud and help her navigate life, from a distance. That would be the best gift you could ever give her 💙

Agree, kids need to learn from mistakes. I know kids that moved out and moved back over a year later to save money then move out for good
