If it lasted, we would totally burn out. I think strong commitment commitment becomes the new love that takes the place of romance. However, there is a lot to say about keeping the romance alive in the relationship but not at the same intensity obviously. You used the word Manic in the romance phase and that is so right on.

You eventually learn through hard experience that the falling in love feeling doesn't last. That feeling is really just biology doing its evolutionary thing, trying to propagate the species. The problem is that society sells us that romantic love is the thing to strive for & if it's not a lifelong feeling something's wrong.
