@veterinarysecrets: Heartworm is one of those diseases I really do not want dog owners underestimating. It is spread by mosquitoes, it can become very serious, and it is now being seen in more places than many people realize. If you live in a high-risk area, I would be looking hard at prevention. If you do not, then at the very least, I would be doing everything I can to reduce mosquito exposure. Michigan here my rescue was diagnosed with heart worm when we got her. We just finished treatment and she is now clear. It’s a difficult process and expensive but worth it. She will now live a mostly normal happy life.
