@comradeneha: Replying to @🇦🇺Stuart Smith 🇦🇺 People keep asking me what we’re supposed to do about Pauline Hanson, One Nation and the rise of the far right. The good news is that we’ve beaten this kind of politics before. A few years ago, Melbourne was gripped by panic about so-called “Sudanese gangs”. Politicians and the media were telling people to be afraid. Communities were being scapegoated. Sound familiar? So we organised. Through the Stronger Than Fear campaign, we knocked on doors, held community BBQs, built unlikely coalitions and had thousands of conversations with people. What we found was very different to the panic being pushed by politicians. Most people liked their neighbours. Most people were proud of their communities. Most people thought the whole thing had been wildly exaggerated. Fear is powerful. But it gets a lot harder to manufacture when people start talking to each other. That’s a lesson worth remembering right now.
