Mandated reporting is usually (and should be) disclosed prior to therapy starting… as in… “I am a mandated reporter, if you say “I am thinking about harming myself or others, I have no discretion, I must report”

number one reason I don't seek help for my OCD is because I am terrified of getting the cops called on my intrusive thoughts

No one is risking their hard earned license on a “maybe “. There is criteria to guide decisions regarding the appropriateness of either a Safety Plan or hospitalization. Following the standards keeps everyone safe. There are some clients who have SI, gestures, threats as baseline behaviors but it takes time to determine that.

The agency I worked at in my younger days had a very trigger-happy hospitalization policy that disgusts me now.

My therapist and I have an agreement that if things get severe, I either call her or get to the hospital on my own. I have been in very rough spots, and she has still not called on me. I think that’s important—being afraid to tell someone how bad it is is part of the reason I’ve got so much work to do in therapy. Her calling unless absolutely needed would have ensured I never tell anyone what’s going on

were terrified to talk to therapists because of this and the fact our first therapist told our parents everything we told her and broke our trust in therapy confidentiality

seriously like my therapist during my toughest time set up a care plan with me that wasn't the hospital due to my trauma and chronic conditions it would be dangerous so we planned that I'd say at a hotel with a safe person of my choice and have daily therapy with her while we talk about what was making me a risk to myself or others luckily I never had to actually do this and the closest I got was sitting in my room for 3 days while I waited for my next appointment to come up and I was on off texting her and a safe friend at the time about how I was feeling

this is one of many reasons it took me 7 years to find a therapist i was comfortable with. not having the fear of that and being more comfortable

THIS. As therapists, we also have to keep in mind that hospitalizations can be sooo traumatic for our clients. Obviously sometimes it is absolutely necessary. But let’s not inadvertently traumatize our clients to make ourselves more comfortable.

My therapist called 911 on me the first session when I was 12 😭 kind of needed though so I don’t mind just messed up my trust of therapy for a while

It’s also because if said client does something once they leave you can be held liable for not reporting it

In addition, explaining to parents that involuntary hospitalization will only add more trauma.

Has anyone come out of the psych ward feeling better …? Also look how many people in the comments admit they can’t be honest with a therapist, which is counterintuitive by nature. The system needs to change so much.

My first counselor called the cops on me over phone tag 🙄 She thought I was in distress and sent 4 cops to my home. I was not, she just wouldn’t answer the phone

I get this, but I recently had an experience with CIT in my city that was really really positive and helpful. When friends and family aren’t stepping up to help, a stranger who cares in an emergency situation can mean a lot
