i moved here 5 years ago and learned that it’s truly gonna be one of those random listings you find on a website with not the greatest pics or while walking through multiple neighborhoods. but if you want more character and charm, it will have to be an independent landlord and not a managed building. plus you can negotiate rates with a private landlord! i know it feels impossible you’ll find something :) I have a 2,000 sq feet apt in the border of larchmont/k-town for 3300!

If you want something with charm, you shouldn’t pick buildings built by investors and developers. Honestly, every single person I know who has rented an apartment like that one has had massive plumbing issues. They’re not built well. Go to older buildings for character and charm. Bonus is they’ve survived massive earth-quakes, which I’m not convinced will be true for the new builds

You have to live in older buildings without amenities lol. I live in a 2 bedroom for under $3k but it has box molding, vaulted ceilings, and a floor to ceiling arched window

You’ll find character and charm more towards the Beverly Hills / Beverlywood / Pico Robertson or Playa Vista areas. The new builds in Culver City are mostly cookie cutter layouts

I actually think La is the best city to find rental units with character! Don’t look at these new buildings and you’ll find much more character!

You have to look in neighborhoods ; Larchmont, Los Feliz, West Hollywood, Mid City, Beverly Hills - all have charm just not always updated with AC / parking / etc

Feel like it is either charm with zero amenities or very plain with nice amenities (like the gym)! Hard to come by a place charm and a huge apartment gym like that

If you want character and charm - maybe look at Los feliz, silverlake, echo park areas. So many cute places. But of that isn’t the area - also mid city have lots of character and charming places.

The number one thing to focus on in LA is the neighborhood. LA is massive and has like 20 different styles of city living within it. Consider what type of lifestyle you want to live, and find the neighborhood that fits that lifestyle. Maybe go to the area you wanna live in and drive around looking for “For Rent” signs, the character and charm apartment might not be listed online 😬 Also… If you already have friends in the city, try to live relatively near them or you’ll never see them.
