Don’t try to do it in a weekend and start work Monday. I literally worked until 5 PM on Friday. Loaded up the U-Haul after work, drove all night Friday night and unloaded the U-Haul on Saturday morning. And then I started my brand new job on Monday morning. It was awful.

Don’t get a storage unit! If it doesn’t fit, sell it or toss it

I’ve moved across the country 4 times so I do feel like I have something to offer here. Hiring a semi was my favorite way. They split the trailer in half so half is someone else’s stuff, but it’s very secure, padlocked and sealed with your initials blah blah. Huge ramp, really big space to fill. Anyways, then I hired local lumpers to load boxes and furniture so they could utilize the space best. Then it gets delivered to your new place at a set day and you get 24 or 48 hours to unload then they come take it away. Second best move I did it all myself with a U-Haul, and towed my car behind. It’s not hard to tow the car behind, just make sure you only pull into places you can pull thru so you don’t have to worry about backing it up with the car on. Start packing early, out of season clothes, kitchen appliances you use once a year etc. CLEANING SUPPLIES, your bed, and pet stuff need to be at the end of the U-Haul so you can get to them first to clean the new place, and sleep comfortably when you finally get there. I’m excited for you!

We got a pod, and it was wonderful. When we got to the new city we stayed in a sublet for 2 months while we looked for apartments and then had the pod stored during that time and delivered to the new apartment once we found it. We used 1 800 packrat bc when we called around they had the best pricing

If your budget allows, hire a moving company and you won’t have a single regret! Otherwise, do the UPack semi-trailer that gets delivered to your new location. Also downsize every where possible, take nothing you haven’t used in the past 12 months.

A great moving tip is to color code your boxes. Red- kitchen, blue- living room etc. just get some duct tape in colors and put a square on each side. It will help make it easier to get everything out and to the correct room. Then you can unpack as needed. As far as the actual move, I would look at the cost of U-Haul and a moving company. They have trailers for your car that will connect to a U-Haul truck if you feel comfortable driving.

I’ve moved across an ocean FIVE times 😅 I got a Ubox shipped last move & I think it was worth not having to refurnish a whole house. Label your boxes well if you get a pod!

You can hire people to help you load your pod/truck/whatever. Call around to local moving companies to see if they offer just a loading crew rate.

Pods are expensive so do this if you have the luxury to afford it. I’ve done Upack before. It’s just like pods. But cheaper because their move your items in a semi truck carrying empty freight crates. The best option where you have more control on the move and can make adjustments as needed since you’re coming from a long way would be to have one person drive the U-Haul and the other to drive your car. Pods and U-pack prices are probably higher too because they estimate the gas into your final price. The easiest thing to do would be get rid of your stuff and start fresh h

If no U-Haul, get something like a Pod. Save yourself the trouble and stress

I wish I would have started packing earlier. I purged for 2 months and it still was a lot to pack. I didn’t take into account how protected I had to pack my artwork and delicates due to using a POD. I’m moving in 1 week 1900 miles and it’s not like moving 20 mins, the way certain things need to be packed to be protected, threw me. It took me a week to pack those things. Now I’m packing the regular stuff and it’s flowing but still a lot of anxiety.

I didn’t personally go through this but a couple years ago my mom moved from northern CA to FL; if you use a trucking service that brings your stuff, read as many reviews as you can and be careful with who you select. She had a nightmare experience, her stuff got lost and delayed for MONTHSSS. It all got there eventually but it was really stressful for her.

everything is replaceable. bring basics for sleeping, basics for kitchen and bathroom. I drove and then had part of a trailer with abf bc it was only like a 1 bedroom apt worth, but could have moved less furniture for sure.

I've moved cross country multiple times. Pods are great if there's space for them to be delivered. The u-haul pods leak. Moving companies cost hundreds of dollars more than you get quoted. The most helpful thing i've done the last few times is pay movers to load/unload the pod, truck, etc. Don't let them pack anything. Just move boxes and furniture. In 2 hours they will do what it would take you and friends an entire day to do and they do it right.

I did the opposite move a few years back, Atlanta to LA! I used a pod and it was really helpful to have them come to my house and pack everything into one pod and just have the pod show up at my new house. However, some things did get broken in the pod. So put the most important things in your car!

I have seen SO many horror stories of moving companies destroying stuff and holding stuff for ransom that even though I was moving alone, I drove a U-Haul myself. Saved THOUSANDS, and knew my stuff was safe. Hired movers to pack the truck, hired another team on the other end to unpack. Got to feel like a big rig driver for a couple of days 🤣🤣 and yeah, I had never driven a 26’ truck before but it was fine. A little scary over the bridges in Louisiana but still okay

Ship things ahead if you can to help alleviate the bulk. U-Haul with a hitch to pull your car. Pack the car with what you need access to, everything else in the truck, locked.
