I'm Black and grew up in a white community. My boyfriends mixed black and white and grew up in a Black community, school, church, etc. He's mixed and has really helped immersed me in Black culture so I agree.

you're centering whiteness though. It doesn't matter if white people see you as white or black. black people are saying, we see you as biracial. and that's okay. you are still in the community, but as biracial, not as black.

We’re not black to them until we do something great, then they want to claim us. Until there are others fond of us for who we are or what we can do, suddenly the black community wants to claim us.

I feel like a big part of race & identity are how people view you & engage with you. So because a biracial person may get certain privileges that aren’t afforded to most black ppl— some will tell them they aren’t black. I’m mixed but not biracial & I feel like due to the complexity of feelings that yt/blk biracial ppl tend to experience they should have their own identity/label because it is a very unique experience

Ehhhh it’s a messy subject, a lot mixed ppl also claim that they are not black, but “mixed” so that’s y it’s a wierd for both sides, some want black ppl to jus claim them as black while they have the privilege to say we are not black and have other agendas. It’s just weird overall that makes it confusing for both sides

There's Bi-Racial and then there's Mixed. Black folks understand the difference

note: During slavery, white people brainwashed Black people to look at each other as fundamentally different based on their proximity to whiteness - mixed race were house slaves; full Black were field slaves - there’s always been a privilege that comes with being mixed or light skinned but at the end of the day white people still only saw us all as subhuman/less than (e.g. one drop rule)
