Alright here is my take: runes magic circles alchemy in FMA are mechanical magic and some use mana and mana crystals as a medium but I think ultimately magic is like friren and another anime I saw I can’t remember the name. But basically is this: magic is divine, theoretical, mechanical, scientific, magical, all in one. It depends on how the user feels magic on its own. Water magic for example. Like avatar and other magic water either A uses their own mana as a cost to create water or use existing water that’s there and doesn’t need mana to create but shape the water to do what you want it to do. This is what’s considered law and taught this way and based as a structure of thinking. But magic is based on the users imagination. A wish to create a miracle and in other ways it’s just a simply different way of thinking. Water is In the air already and knowing this and its properties can now shift the way to defy normal water magic and using a combination of mana and water. Or have a person next to you and extract water from our bodies. For some like divinity magic is based on belief so the stronger you believe the stronger the magic. Ergo the stronger you believe in your magic the stronger you output magic is it self limited to your understanding of the world and its properties. The only issue to figure out is its medium.

the reason mana is important is because you still need energy to do the things youre doing, the same way how you need to keep eating to keep working out, or how the flash needs a bunch of calories because of his metabolism. mana running out is no different then exhaustion after running for miles. you get tired, it requires energy.
