I keep seeing videos where you're repairing this car... the fan-belt, headlight, fuel gauge, the alternator (generator). ..so I'm wondering if the mechanicals need an overhaul to make the car more reliable, or have these older cars always been high maintenance and things will always need frequent repairs?

I took the engine out of my car to do the same thing. Having a shop bore it out is definitely worth it because boy is that a pain to do.
