@willbrinkerhoff: talking dirty to you except it’s literally just me rambling about the thoughts that occupy my head while i’m out here wandering the fields!! this one is seriously cool though — when grasses get grazed, they shift the quantity and types of compounds that they send out from their roots into the soil microbial community! the microbes eat it up and start ‘unlocking’, or mineralizing, nitrogen from soil organic matter. that fuels the plant to grow back high quality tissues which will be big and bright and beautiful by the time the grazers come back around!! #soilhealth #sustainablefarming #covercrop #grazing #soilscience
I wanna go back to grad school for ecology/ plant science. Do you have d any helpful journals to read up on to help focus interests a little?

Green manure stores more carbon and is less ecologically damaging. Just grow and eat the plants.

My dad raises his cattle this way. He works with local farmers and rotates where his herds are. They use the term “regenerative beef” - look up “rafter 9” - he’s in northern Nevada. ❤️

Buffalo ran, tilled.
Cows walk/stand. Isn't soil compaction an issue with having too many cows in one area?

does this mean my no-mow lawn with patches where nothing much is growing could benefit from me occasionally cutting nearby patches of grass🤔

It's why you pinch basil. The compensatory top growth is richer in flavourful oils. I never before considered the underground growth. Thank you.

Is it just grasses that do this? I grow perennials and cut them back to “stimulate” root growth and doubling

I know your research is about agriculture… do you have tips of what we can do as home gardeners to care for our soil?

I want to feed my chickens with a pasture like this. I don’t want to buy any feed or as little feed as possible. Can you suggest a list of grasses etc?.
