Most companies answer the question "why do we do it this way?" with four words: 🤷 "Because we always have." Steve Jobs — in a 1990 interview during his NeXT years — said that answer is the whole problem. Here's what he said: "People shouldn't have to ask management permission to do something. Authority should be vested in the people doing the work to improve their own processes." Then came the line that lands hardest: 🎯 "The permission that's given because of this quality philosophy is the permission to not have to ask permission." Think about what that means in practice. 🧠 The people closest to the work see what's broken first. They know where the friction is. They know what slows things down. But in most companies, those people have to push ideas up a chain before anything changes. And by the time the answer comes back down, the moment has passed and the person who noticed has stopped noticing. 📉 Jobs was drawing on the work of Dr. Joseph Juran — one of the architects of the modern quality movement. The core idea: flatten the hierarchy. Distribute authority to the people best positioned to use it. Not executives. Not managers. The people doing the actual work. 🔥 This wasn't Steve Jobs at Apple at his peak. This was 1990 — after he'd been pushed out of Apple, while building NeXT Computer. He was studying what makes organizations actually function. And what he found was simple: when you trust the people doing the work, the work gets better. Permission to not ask permission. That's the whole thing. 👉 @entrepreneursanctuary #SteveJobs #Leadership #Management #Entrepreneurship #BusinessPhilosophy
