This fresco depicts the Old Testament Vision of the Prophet Ezekiel, which visually illustrates the heavens and the glory of God. The figure in regal attire is a Guardian Archangel holding a liturgical fan (ripidion) that reads ΑΓΙΟΣ (AGIOS) three times, which means "Holy, Holy, Holy" in Greek (the angelic hymn from the Bible). Next to him is a six-winged angel labeled ΕΞΑΠΤΕΡΥΓΟΝ (Six-winged/Seraphim), while the bottom features fiery wheels labeled ΟΙ ΤΡΟΧΟΙ (The Wheels), which according to the Bible carry the divine chariot and have eyes symbolizing omniscience. What the video mentions as a "scratched-off lion's head" is actually a damaged depiction of a Cherub, a heavenly being that, according to Ezekiel's vision, possesses four faces: of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle.

ΑΓΙΟΣ (Agios), which is repeated three times. This is the Greek word for "Holy" and this specific threefold repetition is commonly known as the Trisagion (meaning "thrice-holy") so interesting

The image depicts an ancient Christian Byzantine fresco titled Christ Pantocrator (Christ Enthroned). It is located inside the historic rock-cut Haçlı Kilise (Church of the Cross), situated in the Güllü Dere (Rose Valley) region of Cappadocia, Turkey

This room is in impeccable condition for its age. Probably some of the cleanest ancient painted walls I've seen. The room looks like some type of sound enhancing room. They've altered the sound carrying properties of the room as well by destroying those parts in the middle. So many questions. Beautiful site, thank you!

forbidden canyon discovery” is really a beautiful example of Cappadocia’s cave-church art: early Christians literally carving a sacred micro-universe into the rock, encoding layers of protective, teaching, and unifying symbolism that still radiate to anyone sensitive enough to notice. Christ Pantokrator (the All-Ruling). The hand gesture is a traditional blessing sign formed to spell IC XC (the first and last letters of “Jesus Christ” in Greek). ἍΓΙΟΣ (Hagios = “Holy”). The triple repetition (Ἅγιος Ἅγιος Ἅγιος) echoes the ancient hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy” chanted during every Byzantine liturgy.

The Liturgical Chant: When written three times in succession (ΑΓΙΟΣ, ΑΓΙΟΣ, ΑΓΙΟΣ), it translates directly to "Holy, Holy, Holy." This is the Trisagion (Thrice-Holy) hymn, an essential liturgical prayer in Eastern Christianity. It echoes the angelic hymn from the biblical books of Isaiah (6:3) and Revelation (4:8).

In the throne room of heaven, the cherubim (also called the four living creatures) appear as awe-inspiring beings supporting and surrounding God’s glorious throne. According to the prophet Ezekiel’s vision: “Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. … Each of the cherubim had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like human hands” (Ezekiel 10:14, 21; see also Ezekiel 1:5-11). Their wings were spread out above them — two wings of each creature touched the wings of the others, while two covered their bodies — and they moved straight ahead without turning, full of eyes all around. In Revelation’s heavenly vision, these beings are described with six wings each: “In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures… The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings” (Revelation 4:6-8). Day and night they ceaselessly worship, crying “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” These majestic, multi-faced, many-winged cherubim radiate the holiness, power, and vigilance of God’s throne, blending human, animal, and heavenly traits in perfect service to the Creator.
