In the throne room of heaven, the cherubim (also called the four living creatures) appear as awe-inspiring beings supporting and surrounding God’s glorious throne.
According to the prophet Ezekiel’s vision: “Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. … Each of the cherubim had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like human hands” (Ezekiel 10:14, 21; see also Ezekiel 1:5-11). Their wings were spread out above them — two wings of each creature touched the wings of the others, while two covered their bodies — and they moved straight ahead without turning, full of eyes all around.
In Revelation’s heavenly vision, these beings are described with six wings each: “In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures… The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings” (Revelation 4:6-8). Day and night they ceaselessly worship, crying “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.”
These majestic, multi-faced, many-winged cherubim radiate the holiness, power, and vigilance of God’s throne, blending human, animal, and heavenly traits in perfect service to the Creator.
