@pastorpauldrees: If we can’t have wealth redistribution, could we at least have a public culture in the US where wealthy people are expected to use their wealth for the public good? Maybe this has always been a pipe dream, but imagine a world where the wealthiest Americans compete not over their yachts and islands, but over how many students they educate, or people they feed. The rich, while performing philanthropy, should also pay their share of taxes. Philanthropy can be aimed to benefit only small groups while depriving the public at large money through tax write-offs that could be put toward programs for the masses.

Athens. Ancient Greece. There was no tax system they could figure out so what they did was post a ‘needed’ building. Like aqueducts, roads, public service buildings, etc. benefit was influence and prestige. Which allowed them office seats or favour in policy making given the ‘charity’ to help the state

Something I’ve noticed is when the rich people were industrialist they seemed to do more philanthropy. Now that they are the techno dudes, they do no philanthropy. 🤔

Wealth is not something that can be distributed. There is no fixed, absolute amount of wealth or economic value. Entrepreneurs and their companies are constantly generating more value. SpaceX is now worth $2 billion; this value was created out of thin air, it was not taken from the poor. Capitalism is a cooperative, free economic system that increases economic value; it is not a zero-sum game.
