Why doesn't Mary look at us? Most Madonnas do - they meet your eyes, invite you in. But Duccio's Madonna looks down. At the child in her arms. This was painted around 1290 in Siena… and it changed everything. Before this, Byzantine Madonnas were frontal, stiff, gold-backed. Icons, not people. Theology painted in human form, but without the humanity. Duccio did something different. Look at how she tilts toward him - her weight shifts, her shoulders soften. This isn't a symbol holding an attribute. This is a mother holding her son. And he reaches for her face. Not blessing her. Just... touching her. The way children do. Florence was painting theology. Siena, under Duccio, painted mothers. Here's why that matters: the Incarnation means God became small. Vulnerable. Held. Mary's downcast eyes aren't avoidance - they're contemplation.
