After more than 10 months away from home, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela. And thousands of supporters were waiting to welcome her back. On Sunday, Machado announced her return on X, writing, “In Venezuela! Together! For freedom!” A video showed crowds surrounding her vehicle, waving Venezuelan flags and celebrating her arrival. As her convoy traveled toward the capital, Caracas, people packed highways and overpasses, raising their phones to capture a glimpse of the woman many see as a symbol of hope. But her return comes at a complicated moment for the country. Machado left Venezuela in December 2025 to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway. She had spent much of the previous year in hiding after the disputed 2024 presidential election, when government-controlled electoral authorities declared Nicolás Maduro the winner. In January 2026, US forces removed Maduro from power. Since then, acting President Delcy Rodríguez and US officials have been working on a transition toward new elections. However, Machado and her movement have largely been left out of those negotiations. The US president said he did not know about Machado’s return but hoped she was safe. Machado has repeatedly expressed her desire to help lead Venezuela toward democracy and has hinted that she could run for president again if another election takes place. But no date has been announced for a new vote. For many supporters, her homecoming represents more than a dramatic return. One supporter told CNN that seeing Machado back gave her hope that her children and grandchildren might one day return home, too. Her return has reignited hope, but the real challenge now is turning that hope into lasting change. Do you think Machado’s return could help Venezuela finally achieve a democratic future? \#MariaCorinaMachado #Venezuela #WorldNews #Democracy #breakingnews
