Tom's argument is circular. They were called the golden generation before those tournaments. France almost didnt qualify for the 06 WC until Zidane came back from retirement. That Germany team also wasn't stacked. They were called the Golden Generation because of what they did at club level it just didn't translate to international footy. To disprove they are the golden generation you'd have to counter why their club appearances were overrated

I've always been under the impression that 'golden generation' is due to the talent, not necessarily what they achieved. Belgium had back-to-back golden generations & won nothing, but they were still golden generations. Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Beckham, Owen, Rooney... that's a golden generation of talent.
