Can you stand on one foot for 30 seconds? If not, don’t worry. Balance is a skill, and like any skill, it can be trained. Start by strengthening your foundation. Perform high-rep calf raises, then progress to relevé calf raises and calf raise holds. Strong feet and calves are essential for balance, stability, and fall prevention. Next, train your hip flexors with single leg marches and strengthen your glute medius with standing lateral leg raises. These muscles play a major role in keeping you stable when you’re standing, walking, and changing directions. From there, hold a yoga lunge for 20 seconds to build strength through your hips, quads, knees, and ankles. Add horse stance holds to strengthen your hips and improve lower body endurance. Then practice the single leg hip hinge. This is one of the best exercises for improving balance while strengthening your hamstrings, glutes, and overall hip drive. Use support if needed and gradually work toward doing it unassisted. Finally, spend time simply standing on one foot. Sometimes the best way to improve balance is exposure. Hold onto a wall, counter, or chair if necessary and challenge yourself to rely on it less over time. Set a timer today. Test your balance. Practice these exercises for a week and see if you can beat your score. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is maintaining the strength, stability, and confidence to move well for life.
