One reason the Ekiti were rarely defeated in war was their hilly geography, which served as a natural defence and contributed to their resilience during the Ekiti Parapo War. Interestingly, "Kiriji" was only a nickname for the war, derived from the onomatopoeic sound of the sophisticated weapons used. Ekiti is also known for its linear settlement pattern, which aided trade, and for being the only state where all communities share the suffix "Ekiti." Across their communities, the common greeting "Okun o" further reflects their shared identity. My interest in local history led me to explore Ekiti history deeply during my undergraduate years.
