I had the opportunity to speak at a press briefing event on behalf of Progress Missouri about the potential impacts of Amendment 5 on Health Care. I am always honored to share my story in hopes of reaching others who may relate to raise awareness. We can do better. More on Amendment 5: If passed, Amendment 5 would eliminate Missouri's income tax, a move that would require either raising the state sales tax from 3% to 10.7% or dramatically expanding the range of goods and services subject to taxation, according to analysis from the Missouri Budget Project. While healthcare services are currently exempt from Missouri sales taxes, the proposal contains no language preventing future legislatures from removing those exemptions as they work to replace income tax revenue. The Missouri Independent reported that the measure grants lawmakers broad authority to expand sales taxes on goods and services, potentially exposing healthcare services to taxation in the future. Between 60% - 80% of Missourians would see a net tax increase under a sales-tax-driven system; the wealthiest 1% of Missourians would receive average annual tax cuts approaching $40,000.. @Progress MO Get out to the polls in August to vote NO on Amendment 5 (and vote NO amendment 4 to save our IP process while you’re at it). And of course, vote NO on 3 in November to stop the ban on abortion and secure our win for reproductive access. @Abortion Action Missouri @NO on 3 - Stop the Ban MO #missouri #chronicillness #politicstiktok #reproductive #publichealth
