I understand where he’s coming from but I’m worried that when the friend is ready to fully leave, he won’t see OP as a safe person to go to for help anymore and those lifelines are critical.

as someone who escaped this kind of situation myself, there are so many layers to work through in this one. nta for protecting his peace of mind, but definitely ignorant of what's actually going on. he should sit with his friend and hear him out. determine what kind of help he could give. in abusive relationships, friends and family are huge lifelines.

I’m torn. I understand OP’s feelings and they deserve to protect their peace. Also: statistically it can take around 7 attempts for a person to leave an abusive relationship. The friend is showing signs they want out. I would offer a safe haven while trying not to be emotionally invested

as someone who has been in multiple abusive relationships, beautiful is right. OP should protect his peace, but leaving those relationships is more complicated psychologically and financially than people realize. I think OP should reach out to the friend's mom.

On average it is the 7th REPORTED abuse situation that happens before the victim leaves. That number only reports the times that the abuse has a file report. In reality, it is many times more than that. Because victims won’t always report the abuse.

As a survivor, he had every right to turn his friend away. He is right for not to be around that person because it gets bad. Fortunately for me, I did not lose my best friends and close friends. They did not give up on me.
