Zhu Di, the Yongle Emperor (1360–1424), the fourth son of the Hongwu Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. His reign title was Yongle and his temple name Chengzu. He is the only ruler in Chinese history who ascended the throne after rebelling as an imperial clan prince with a mere 800 men. When his troops closed in to lay siege to Nanjing, one can well picture him thinking to himself: "Dear nephew, your uncle is here." The Jianwen Emperor successively carried out a policy to strip imperial princes of their fiefdom authority. Five princes were deposed, imprisoned or put to death. Zhu Di’s military power drew the imperial court’s suspicion and close surveillance; a direct armed clash would have led to his immediate ruin. To evade preemptive elimination, he resorted to feigning madness, behaving erratically and sleeping rough on city streets, successfully lulling court officials into lowering their guard. Lessons drawn: When trapped in adversity and drastically outmatched by opponents, never act out of impulsive bravado or lay bare your ambitions through reckless confrontation. Instead, temper your edge, keep a low profile and feign vulnerability to avoid premature targeting, safeguarding your very foundation for survival first. Biding your time does not equal surrender; it is a means to stay alive and wait for a turning point.#chinesehistory #mingdynasty #朱棣 #China #Chinese
